How to compress an image

  1. Drop a PNG, JPEG or WebP into “Your files”.
  2. Say “compress this image”, or press Run in the settings form: WebP at quality 70 is set on this page.
  3. Check how much smaller it got; lower the quality or the maximum width for more.
  4. Download the smaller image from Results.

Things you can type: compress this image make it smaller

Two dials: quality and size

Quality decides how much detail the encoder may discard, and 70 is a good balance for most pictures. Dimensions matter even more: halving the width and height quarters the number of pixels, which shrinks any format.

This page starts with WebP, which gives the smallest files. If the place you are uploading to does not accept WebP, choose JPEG in the settings form — or “Same as the original” to keep the format.

Why a PNG may not shrink

PNG is lossless, so its quality setting does nothing; to make a PNG smaller, reduce its dimensions or convert it to WebP or JPEG. The image resizer is set up for exactly that.

Nothing is uploaded to be compressed: your browser decodes the picture and encodes it again on your device, which is also why the answer can show the new size immediately.

This page runs the image converter, set up for one job. Open that page for everything it can do.

Questions

Compress image: common questions

How much smaller will it get?

It depends on the picture. Screenshots and photos converted from PNG to WebP often shrink by 80% or more; an already-compressed JPEG shrinks less.

Can I set a target file size?

Not directly. Lower the quality or the maximum width until the size shown in the answer is small enough.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It is compressed by your browser on your device, and camera location data is not carried over.
