Base64 encoder and decoder

Encode any text as Base64, or decode a Base64 string back into readable text. UTF-8 is handled properly, and the text never leaves your browser.

How to encode or decode Base64

  1. Paste your text or Base64 into the message box, or drop a text file into “Your files”.
  2. Say “encode it as base64” or “decode this base64”. In the settings form, choose Text → Base64 or Base64 → text.
  3. Read the result in the answer.
  4. Copy it, or download it from Results.

UTF-8, not just ASCII

The browser’s own btoa() fails on anything outside Latin-1, which is why so many quick encoders break on a curly quote or an emoji. This one encodes the text as UTF-8 bytes first, so Café 日本語 survives the round trip exactly.

Decoding ignores line breaks and spaces inside the Base64, which is how it usually arrives when copied out of an email or a log.

Why decode it here

Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can read it. The strings people decode are often tokens, configuration values or email attachments, and pasting them into a website that sends them to its server shares whatever they contain.

Here the decoding happens in your tab. For converting tables instead, see the data format converter.

Questions

Base64 encode and decode: common questions

Is Base64 encryption?

No. It is a way of writing bytes as plain characters. Anyone can decode it, so it hides nothing.

Does it support emoji and accented letters?

Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 before it is turned into Base64, and decoded as UTF-8 afterwards.

Can it decode a Base64 image?

It decodes Base64 into text. Binary content such as an image will decode, but it is not shown as a picture.
